Embattled San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick was benched during the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears.

Kaepernick, who has made headlines with his controversial national anthem protest, ended the day with just four passing yards, as the 49ers lost their 11th straight game.

It was the first time in NFL history that a quarterback threw for less than five yards and was sacked five times in a game.

After the game, Kaepernick said he did not expect to be benched in favor of Blaine Gabbert, despite the dismal performance.

“I am surprised,” he told reporters. “It wasn’t something that was expected. I’m always prepared and ready to do anything I can to help this team win.”

People took to social media to react to Kaepernick’s benching:

@49ers @NFL Kaepernick benched in Q4 👍.Takes a knee during anthem, celebrates 1969 Blk Panther leader. This guy is a jerk. Bench him 4ever.

Kaepernick has brought this mess on himself. This is more of the country being fed up with the anti-American sediment.

I wonder if @Kaepernick7 will take a knee during the national anthem in the Canadian league next year.

Colin Kaepernick is proving to be much better at kneeling than playing QB. He became first NFL QB in history to throw for fewer than 5 yards

@TimTebow @Kaepernick7 how about this idea benching Kaepernick and San Fran signs up Tim Tebow instead to lead the team??!!

I was excited to hear that Colin Kaepernick got benched. Now he can kneel during the whole game. America is applauding!
